Huge huge HUGE thank you to Penguin Teen for sending me a copy of Tahereh Mafi's WHICHWOOD for review and for letting me take part in the blog tour! This book is GORGEOUS, both inside and out!
But soon, a pair of familiar strangers appears, and Laylee's world is turned upside down as she rediscovers color, magic, and the healing power of friendship.
I have consistently loved all of Tahereh Mafi's books. Her writing just speaks to me. Furthermore was one of my favorite books last year, I loved the world she'd created as well as the beautiful characters. So needless to say, I've been pretty excited for WHICHWOOD.
While I didn't quite love Whichwood as much as I loved Furthermore, there was still so much to love about this book. The world that Mafi built in the first book was further explored and I absolutely loved seeing a different place within that world. The setting was just as quirky and fun as I expected, but this time with a darker tone that definitely set it apart and gave Whichwood a bit of a different feel. It makes me wish Mafi could write a book for each and every town in the world of Furthermore and Whichwood, because she's a genius when it comes to developing a setting and giving it her own brand of charm.
The protagonist, Laylee, at first didn't really grab me. She's very different from a lot of the main characters I read in that she wasn't charming or outspoken or the type that I instantly like. She was very timid and to herself, to the point where at first even I as the reader didn't feel like I was getting to know her. But as her story progressed, Laylee's character unfolded beautifully. She was still quite unique, and always stayed true to her character, but as her whole situation and personality were revealed I couldn't help but grow attached and really feel for her.
The supporting cast is great. I was so happy to see some old favorites make a return, and they really added a fun element to Whichwood.
Overall, I'd highly recommend WHICHWOOD, especially if you enjoyed Furthermore(which I also HIGHLY recommend!). Tahereh Mafi never fails to write in the most beautiful way, and her storytelling has grown with each book she's written. Fingers crossed she revisits the world of Whichwood and Furthermore again in the future!
