I’m a witch, and witches burn.
This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily's other self in this alternate universe. What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.
Fantasy and paranormal reads are what originally got me into reading, but over the years I have found myself drifting further and further away from the genre, but lately I have found a few of them sneaking back onto my bookshelf. And after reading Trial By Fire I know that I am back in love with the paranormal world.
I have never read any of Josephine Angelini’s books before but have heard so much about her from the book community that there was no way that I couldn’t pick this up, and from the very first page I could not put it down. Angelini has created a world so unique and so utterly amazing and thought-provoking that on every page I could not wait to take in all the details she bestowed to us and move on to find out more about the parallel world.
Lily’s character is one that I loved straight away. I found myself drawn to her and intrigued about her life and her relationship with Tristan. Getting to know them and their friendship within the first few chapters I must admit, I was slightly apprehensive about seeing the story turn into a paranormal read, but nothing about the story that was to come let me down. I loved seeing the development of Lily’s character, from the weakness she held in her world because of her fever and allergies and the hold Tristan has over her, to her being strong and brave through the fear and pain and surprises thrown at her in this new one. Sometimes I find that it is hard to give yourself over to a book that is any way foreign to you, but Angelini lets you experience everything with Lily. Introducing to places, characters and adventures that rocks your world as much as Lily’s.
Seeing Lily’s character and story develop, one of the things I most enjoyed about this story is the fact that yes, it is jammed full of action and magic but there is true friendship and love running through the whole thing.
From the willstone’s to the bioluminescent trees, I love everything that Angelini has put into this story. It was amazing to have such a fresh read where you can tell that the author has put in a lot of passion and planning into the book, which makes it so easy to get lost in the world she creates. With the mix of magic and science, it makes the story that much more unique and believable as the two are so tightly bound that you can understand how this world can exist, because although it is another world it is an alternative and not completely parallel.
Trial By Fire is a book that I urge you all to read, no matter if you a fantasy, romance or action fanatic, I promise you that it will stand proudly on your bookshelf as it does on mine. I give it three out of three Bookinity stars! I cannot wait for the story to continue in Trial of Tears, and I will definitely be reading all of Josephine Angelini’s book.
I guess it is fair to say that I am completely and utterly addicted to the WorldWalker Trilogy and that this book has one of the most beautiful covers that I have ever seen!
