Thank you to HarperTeen and Edelweiss for providing me with a copy of The Upside of Unrequited in exchange for an honest review!
Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso has had 26 unrequited crushes, none of which she acted on as she was afraid of rejection- mostly because she believes she is fat. When her cynical twin, Cassie, meets a gorgeous girl named Mina and spirals down into lovesick oblivion, Molly must deal with the loneliness that comes with it. But, Cassie tries to set her up with a cute, redhead hipster boy named Will so she can spend time with both her girlfriend and Molly. Molly finds him good crush material, and she incessantly tells herself that she likes him so she can get both her first kiss and her twin back. But she soon finds herself falling for her chubby, Tolkien superfan coworker Reid, which isn't how the plan is supposed to go- right?
THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED is the first book I've read by Becky Albertalli, so going into it I wasn't quiiite sure what to expect. I'd heard nothing but great things about her first novel, Simon Vs. the Homosapian Agenda, so I really wasn't worried about this one too much.
Right off the bat I knew this book was going to be a keeper. The main character, Molly, was immediately loveable and relatable. Actually, all of the supporting cast of this book were super endearing and a blast to read.
At times the story felt felt a bit cliched and predictable. I knew right away who Molly was going to end up with and how some of the big plot points would play out. But the author has a very charming writing style that I was really able to connect with. I mean, she included an Arrested Development reference, so I knew it was meant to be. The story itself was fun and engaging, despite feeling a bit like it had been done before.
Overall, I really didn't have any complaints with this one. I think it's a great summer read with a few deeper messages that give it a little bit of an edge. It was engaging enough for me to read in two sittings, and had some moments that made me genuinely laugh out loud. I can't wait to see what Albertalli writes next!
