I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.
Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.
Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?
I love this book. LOVE this book. Wow, I went into it with absolutely zero expectations, I was unfamiliar with Kami Garcia’s writing, and wow. THE LOVELY RECKLESS impressed me so much and is now sitting proudly on my favorites shelf.
The Lovely Reckless was SO much fun to read. It’s fast-paced from the first page, with a story that gets it’s hooks in you right away and doesn’t let go. I loved the overlying theme that how much money a person has or where they’re forced to live doesn’t define who they are or what kind of person they can turn out to be.
The characters are insanely loveable. Frankie is a fantastic lead, I really adored her character and loved seeing her react to the different situations she was thrust into. Marco is incredibly sexy, I pretty much fell for his character the first time he was on the page. I do feel like their romance moved a little quickly, but but once it was in already happening it felt natural and I was able to accept it and eagerly keep reading for more. This book also has a great cast of supporting characters, Cruz being my favorite of the bunch. She’s AMAZING, and I love the fact that she’s the tough girl, but Garcia didn’t write a big confrontation between the main character and tough girl as soon as they met. I am so sick of reading that same thing over and over, and it was so so refreshing to see two girls from very different lifestyles meet and become friends and that’s that.
The Lovely Reckless is action packed, fast-paced, and full of high stakes situations that made it impossible for me to put down. It’s full of characters that I couldn’t help but love, and friendships that are absolutely beautiful. There is definitely some instalove happening, but I found myself not caring because this book is just so overpoweringly GOOD. I will definitely be reading this one over and over again and I highly recommend it to absolutely everyone.
