"The Fashion Committee is another winner by one of my all time favorite authors."--Meg Cabot, New York Times bestselling author of the The Princess Diaries and Mediator series
Charlie Dean is a style-obsessed girl who eats, sleeps, and breathes fashion. John Thomas-Smith is a boy who forges metal sculptures in his garage and couldn't care less about clothes. Both are gunning for a scholarship to the private art high school that could make all their dreams come true. Whoever wins the fashion competition will win the scholarship--and only one can win.
Told in the alternating voices of Charlie's and John's journals, this hilarious and poignant YA novel perfectly captures what it's like to have an artistic drive so fierce that nothing--not your dad's girlfriend's drug-addicted ex-boyfriend, a soul-crushing job at Salad Stop, or being charged with a teensy bit of kidnapping--can stand in your way.
With black and white art custom-created by fashion and beauty illustrator Soleil Ignacio, the book is a collector's item, perfect for anyone with a passion for fashion.
I thought this book was a blast. It was a compelling read with surprising emotional depth and some really complex main characters, but still it had a since of fun and light-heartedness.
Charlie Dean was one of the most likeable main characters I've read in a long time. I immediately just wanted her to be happy and to have absolutely everything she could ever wish for. The other main character, John Thomas-Smith, was so freaking relatable. I hardcore understood this character, why he did the things he did, and how he felt in every circumstance. The development of the characters here and how their stories intertwined was just brilliant.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me in this book was that romance totally took a back burner. When I read the summary my brain might have been going, "Yeah, yeah, those two are totally gonna fall in love(lol) and have an endearing kissy moment in a pile of fabric." I had that thought. Promise. Thank you Susan Juby for writing a story that was NOT that predictable. This book did NOT go in the direction I suspected it would and that was SO REFRESHING! Like seriously, I really don't want to guess the endgame within five pages and I'm so glad that didn't happen with this one!
This one is a great summer read that fills in a gap that a lot of fluffy, summery, why-are-these-characters-all-the-same books seem to miss completely. There is fantastic emotional depth, a diverse cast, and main characters that really speak for themselves and make you feel for them. Plus, it's just really fun to read!
(One of these songs is actually from the book, but I'm not going to tell you which so you'll just have to read it to find out! *cue evil laughter*)
