I want to extend a huge thank you to Penguin Young Readers for sending me a copy of PIPER- an eery new graphic novel from the mind behind Thirteen Reasons Why! Keep reading for a little more about this fantastic retelling of the Pied Piper legend plus my review!
When Maggie meets the mysterious Piper, it seems that all her wishes are coming true. Spellbound, Maggie falls for him and plunges headfirst into his magical world. But as she grows closer to the Piper, Maggie discovers that he has a dark side ... and an even darker past. Will the boy of Maggie's dreams end up being her worst nightmare?
I have been in a major graphic novel phase lately. Can't seem to get enough of them. So obviously, I was super into the idea of a Pied Piper retelling done as a graphic novel- I mean, who wouldn't be? And PIPER definitely didn't let me down, I thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover.
PIPER does a really great job of not having a clear-cut antagonist. It shows how bad situations tend to either bring out the best or the worst in people. I was able to empathize with a lot of the characters, even if I disagreed with their actions and reactions. As fun of a read as this one was, it also had underlying messages about who we think we need to be and how we should treat others that are very important. PIPER does a fantastic job of getting its point across without seeming preachy.
Overall, I highly recommend this one. It's great for graphic novel lovers because it has gorgeous illustrations and a really fun story, and it's great for other readers because of its compelling characters and well-structured story. I definitely recommend preordering PIPER or picking up a copy October 31 if you can!
