You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)
Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
First off, let me just say that I absolutely love the idea behind MY PLAIN JANE. My Lady Jane is easily one of my favorite books, and the Lady Janies have come up with a wonderful formula to add humor and fun to some historical stories and characters. So why only three stars for this one?
I really fell exactly in the middle with my rating on My Plain Jane. I didn't NOT like it - I blazed through this one in a day. But it also just didn't have the same special feeling to it that I got from My Lady Jane.
For one, while these characters were fun and really fit the story well, they just didn't impact me as much as I had hoped for. Jane was honestly the most boring for me, and while Charlotte and Alexander were a bit more excited, they still fell a bit flat in places.
There was also less humor than I was expecting. Yes, there were still a lot of truly funny moments, none of them have stuck with me, whereas a particular scene in the first book still gets me to this day.
But like I said, I really didn't dislike this book! The story itself is so much fun, so original and unpredictable. It's really well written, so easy to read and get lost in. And I just think these three authors compliment each other perfectly, as the book as a whole is seamless.
If you enjoyed My Lady Jane, love the story of Jane Eyre, or are just looking for a fun historical fantasy fix, then MY PLAIN JANE is the book for you! It's not a perfect book, but I just know these characters will sing to somebody else's soul, and it's a really fun, fast read.
