There is something about Elisa Dane writing that just makes me melt and Defenseless had me weak at the knees once again. I have fallen in love with the characters, cheer and the Diamond Girls all over again.
Back when we started Bookinity in April ’14 Elisa and I started talking and I was thrilled to get given the opportunity to review the first book in the series, Ex Factor. Although I was unsure if the series was going to be for me because of their cheerleading theme, I went in with an open mind and was blown away by the realistic content in the stories as well as the completely loveable characters.
If you are new to the Diamond Girl world then the series is set around the lives of a group of teenage girls who all belong to the top cheer squad, Diamond Girls. Although each book is a stand alone, Ex Factor,Unbreakable and Defenseless, I recommend that you read them in that order. One of the many great things about Dane’s writing is the way in which you get to grown with the characters. You see them develop and become young women. I think this is especially noticeable with Nev, from who she is at the beginning of the series to Defenseless. Don’t worry, no spoilers but you can read my reviews for Ex Factorand Unbreakable by clicking here.
Defenseless is the story of Claire. Quirky, confident and sassy by nature, Claire is one of the top girls on the Diamond Girls cheer squad. That is until tragedy strikes the group and she is left guilt ridden and alone, and the only person that makes her feel a little more whole again is the one person that she is forbidden to go near.
Dane’s has a great way of capturing the essence of a teenage girl so perfectly in all of her novels. This probably comes from her own daughters being teenage cheerleaders, who inspired the Diamond Girls series. I often found myself laughing out loud at things the characters say or do because they relate so much to my friends and I. This is especially evident when one of Dane’s iconic male leaders is around. In true tradition of my Diamond Girls reviews let us take a moment to drool over brooding, gorgeous and dangerous Ryker. Bravo to Dane for this swoon worthy character! I definitely blame her for giving me such high standards in men.
When I started Defenseless I was a little knocked back with some of the cheerleading technical terms but Elisa does a great job of explaining them to the readers, plus, after reading the first two books I am learning the terms so you do begin to visualise the routines in a way that I couldn’t before. Please do not let the cheer aspect put you off as these is so much to these books to love, and I for one have completely fallen in love with the sport because of them. Dane’s books cover some real gritty themes, such as drink driving and texting which adds another dimension to the series which you do not usually find in YA romance.
As always Elisa has succeeded in writing a beautiful story. It is jam-packed full of emotions, laughter and hot guys. I promise it will have you gripped from the very start!
Top stars for Defenseless!
