Ok, if you are looking for Alice in Wonderland meets The Walking Dead, Alice In Zombieland is not that book. The title is a bit misleading, as there are VERY few references to Lewis Carroll’s beloved classic in this story. It is, however, chock full of zombies, so if you’re into that kind of thing, this is the book for you!
After a horrible accident, Alice Bell is left an orphan trying to understand what she saw happen to her family. After years of not believing that her father truly did see monsters where no one else did, Ali begins to understand just what exactly he was seeing. Ali is forced to move in with her grandparents and begin attending a new high school, where she finds a group of rough students who see the same undead monsters she is now tormented by. She begins to trust, and maybe even fall for, bad boy Cole Holland, who has his own secrets. Together with their friends, they fight the zombies who took away everything Ali loved.
I thought this book was fantastic. It has a very different take on zombies, more than just the normal brain-dead, grave-escaping monsters that usually fill the pages of a book like this. Gena Showalter has created a completely original story(although the title is not so original) that is extremely fast paced and intense. It kept me addicted until the last page, and now I’m dying to get my hands on the sequel!
The characters are also very well written. Ladies, get ready to fall in love with Cole, because I don’t think anyone can resist the descriptions of his violet eyes and his bad boy appeal. Really, all of the characters are well written. I didn’t feel as though they felt into specific type-casts, the bad boys were bad boys but they also had sweet, honest sides, and the popular girls weren’t fake but were relatable. It helped to make this story feel like it could really happen, minus the zombies.
My only complaint about the book was that I really was hoping to read Alice in Wonderland WITH ZOMBIES, and this is in no way that book. I was very pleasantly surprised though by the story I did get, and ended up falling in love with it by the end. Overall I give is ⅘ stars, and as I said earlier, I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!
