Reason #1- LOOK AT THAT COVER.
Keep reading for more reasons why I think Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES series is actually the best and you should definitely find yourself a copy ASAP! Sending a HUGE huge thank you to my friends at Penguin Young Readers for letting me take part in this blog tour!
Reason #2- Check out this summary, y'all.
Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.
Reason #3- TAKE A BETTER LOOK AT THAT COVER.
Reason #4- Look, I know I've mentioned the cover already, but did you see it? Because it's a little bit I mean a lot important. Laia, that awesome chick you see there front and center? She's a woman of color. Front and center. On the cover. Of a #1 NYT bestselling author's book. It's kinda a big deal.
Reason #5- The author is a woman of color. By supporting this book, you're supporting someone who's voice has had a much harder road to travel than most that you read. Sabaa Tahir is one of the best voices in YA, and she deserves every. single. book. sold.
Reason #6- So. Much. Slow. Burn. Everything. Remember when I just said a second ago that Sabaa Tahir is super duper talented. Well, LET ME TELL YOU, she knows how to develop a story. This series is a monument. AN EMBER IN THE ASHES just lays the foundation, and it lays it so strongly, so wonderfully, that you don't even notice. While reading you think things such as, "Oh my, what a wonderful book!" and "Well that there sure is an interesting detail!" Well, GUESS WHAT. Those 'wonderful' moments and 'interesting details' actually MEAN THINGS. And they all pay off later! That's some good writing, and something you don't see all that often.
Reason #7- THE CHARACTERS. Laia! Elias! HELENE! MY PRECIOUS HELENE! If you, like me, enjoy character driven stories then this is definitely the series for you. The main characters are all written so well, with distinctive personalities and realistic emotions. UGH. I'm getting feels just thinking about them THEY ARE THAT GOOD.
Reason #8- Remember how I just mentioned how good the characters are? WELL. Laia, the STAR of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, is magnificent. Why, you ask? Here's the thing about the wonderful Laia. She is not brave. She is not a skilled fighter. She is not the best at a thing. She can't shoot a bow with her eyes closed and her hands chopped off. Laia is A NORMAL PERSON. If baddies came knocking at my door to kill my family? Yeah, I'd react the same way as Laia. I have no skills besides my snark and strong opinions. Laia is SO incredibly relatable as a main character. And what's better is that she grows. And grows and grows. Which in turn makes her an inspiration.
Reason #9- The writing is just so, so good. This holds true for the sequel, A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, as well. Its hard to believe these are Sabaa Tahir's debut books, they're that polished and well done. I can't imagine what she will be like as a veteran author. MY EMOTIONS ARE NOT READY FOR THAT, QUEEN OF CLIFFHANGERS.
Reason #10- seriously DID YOU LOOK AT THAT COVER?!
